2010 COSTA State Team Selection Process

From the May 1st 2010, COSTA  State Championship all Blackbelts 1st and 2nd place winners will advance to the Colorado 2nd Annual Team Trials.

From the May 22nd 2010, AAU District 10 Qualifier all Blackbelts 1st and 2nd place winners will advance to the Colorado 2nd Annual Team trials

Junior Blackbelt 1st place winners from both events above will also advance to the 2nd annual Colorado Team Trials but they must have written permission from their parents and coach to compete in the combined adult divisions. At this time we do not have the funds to guarantee a COSTA Junior Sponsored Team but rest assured it is our TOP GOAL to be able to announce after the May 1st 2010 COSTA State Championship that we will also be sponsoring a Junior Team using the same format as the Senior Team!

The 2nd Annual Colorado Team Trials (August 14th 2010) will use Lajust Electronic Scoring including the electronic socks so all athletes participating must own their electronic socks. COSTA will provide the Lajust Chest Protector and computers.  We will insure to have qualified referees and no two referees from a competitor's same school will be allowed to officiate that particular match. The divisions will be based on Olympic Weights combining fin/fly  ban/fea  light/wel  mid/hvy.  The method of competition is still being discussed and will depend on the size of the division.  We would like to have a round robin format but we may use a double elimination selection process if there are more than 5 participants in a division.

Once an athlete makes the COSTA Athlete Sponsored 2010 team their entry fee will be paid by COSTA to compete at the Rocky Mountain Open on Nov 6th 2010.  This is all that is guaranteed for 2010 for this team.  It is our hope to raise funds to give any 2010 COSTA Team member who wins 1st Place at the Rocky Mountain Open an additional stipend to assist that athlete compete at the 2011 US Open. That additional stipend is yet to be determined and will only be given to the athlete conditional on funds being available and after the athlete registers for the US Open and has purchased their airfare.

Once on the Sponsored Athlete Team you are guaranteed that the spot is yours.  There are no mandatory team workouts!  In as much as training goes, COSTA sponsored team athletes are expected to continue to train with their individual teams and also are expected to attend the COSTA clinics to motivate other young fighters by sharing their talent and encouragement. Should a COSTA 2010 Team Member choose not to compete at the Rocky Mountain Open then the 2nd place athlete will be moved up to your vacated spot to compete at the Rocky Mountain Open.  Athletes will secure their own travel plans to the US Open as well as secure their own coach.  This method was a HUGE success with the 2009 Colorado AAU Team!  There is nobody better to coach the winning athlete than the coach that helped them win the spot on the sponsored athlete team!   If any COSTA sponsored athlete does not have a coach attending the US Open then we will make sure one of the MANY coaches from Colorado attending the US Open gives that athlete support.
